I attended college in Statesboro, GA and currently live in Atlanta. Being used to traveling during the holidays I decided to go to Savannah and stay at the Hyatt Regency to bring in the new year. I enjoyed my panoramic view of the Savannah River and people watching from my suite. Savannah is a beautiful city filled with lots of history, great food and southern hospitality.
There is soo much to do on riverstreet alone. It is filled with restaurants, candy and gift shops, bars and booths to purchase your tour site tickets.Being near the ocean I knew I could get some of the freshest seafood. I stopped in at Bayou Cafe and ordered a bucket of steamed oysters. The bucket comes with about 30 oysters and satisfied a table of four. They also have the best homemade hot sauce which can be purchased. Being a sugar junkie my next stop was Riverstreet Sweets. This place is heaven for anyone with a sweet tooth. It is divided into sections. There is your chocolate section filled with truffles, candied apples, and caramel covered pralines; sugar section where you can fill a bag with as much candy you want and even an ice cream section that also has gelato. If you're ever in the mood for a bloody Mary stop by the Cotton Exchange Tavern and sit at the bar. Make sure Ms. Jean is your bartender. She makes the most killer drinks and has been working there for 30 years and if you're lucky she'll tell you some of her good ole ghost stories.
With my sweet tooth satisfied I wanted to do a little shopping. I am all about supporting local artist so I went to the River Street Marketplace. Open 7 days a week RSM brings you hand-crafted items such as wood works and soap as well as souvenir keepsakes. Many which are nicer than the ones you will see in the main stores. There are many things do on River Street and Bay Street alone which also holds many restaurants and bars. Take a stroll in Savannah to view the beautiful architecture and squares located along the north and south sides of the city. Not to mention you have Chippewa Square which is where parts of Forest Gump was filmed. You can find the bench he was sitting on at the Historic Savannah Theatre. There is also the First African Baptist Church located only two blocks from the river and was used as one of the safe havens for the Underground Railroad. You can take a tour for as low as $7 Tuesdays through Saturdays. There is nothing better than people watching on the square, looking at the beautiful Spanish Moss or having a picnic. You will always see musicians performing and painters for your enjoyment.
When you visit Savannah you can not leave with out going on a haunted tour. The ghost won't let you. Savannah is known as the most haunted city in America. There are haunted pub crawls where you can drink and listen to ghost tales, or you may choose to ride around in a real hearse and visit gravestones or even better check out the paranormal activities yourself where you are given devices to track down ghosts....in the basement. As a fan of everything and anything haunted, I greatly enjoyed myself on these tours.
As another day went by new years eve had finally come. I slept in late so I would have enough energy to stay up all night and bring in the new year. I got my dose of brunch at Windows located downstairs across the lobby at the Hyatt, did a little bit more shopping and splurged on seafood once again. As night fell Wet Willies hosted Up The Cup to bring in the new year. They said they are rising the cup because if they it dropped it well...that would be littering. Riverstreet was filled with thousands of people to bring in the new year. I socialized with locals and tourist and met up with some good ole college friends. 5...4...3...2...1 HAPPY NEW YEAR!
